Yesterday Abby and Andrew were standing up playing with little toys right next to each other. Without thinking about it, Abby tossed Andrew's iPod Touch to him. And it hit him in the cheek/eye area. He started sobbing instantly and ran three steps over to me.
Immediately, Abby ran behind him and layed her hand on his back and prayed as loudly as she could over his loud wails, "DEAR JESUS, PLEASE HELP ANDREW'S EYE FEEL ALL BETTER. AYYYY-MEN." His wailing continued.
Without missing a beat, she darted for the couch where his beloved blankie was laying. Mind you, his knitted blankie has been unraveling over the last 3 weeks and there are three distant sections (though they are all attached): Blankie, Corner, and String Ball. Well, in Abby's sheer tenacity to bring Andrew comfort as quickly as possible, she grabbed the String Ball section and ran back to him. Lo and behold, String Ball snapped off from Blankie and Corner. He looked at her, looked at String Ball in horror, looked at me, and exclaimed, "Did String Ball just break off?" I said in an optimistic tone, "No, it multiplied!" (way to comfort a barely 4-year-old with the word 'multiplied', Sarah.)
He continued to sob.
Abby then quickly layed her hand on Andrew's back as she swayed back and forth singing, "Lullaby, and Goodnight, Little Andrew and Abby are goin' sleepins pies. Lullaby..." He kept crying and then I broke in:
"Abby, can you say sorry to brother?"
"Sowwy Brudder."
"It's okay Ahh-bee."
And they hugged.
I'm actually quite impressed that, at age 2 1/2, she stayed so cool and collected from Plan A - Plan D. And quite flattered that she finds my poorly-lyric-ed lullaby comforting.
